    Well I never
I just discovered that one of my favourite Pet Shop Boys songs, to wit In The Night is actually based on a real-life thing: a French youth movement during the Second World War. And here was me thinking it was just a French name they'd made up.

Well, you learn something every day.

    Walid Salem and Munir Hussain
Just to follow up on what I was saying to people yesterday:
Salem suffered brain damage and fractures, including a skull fracture, during the attack.

    [...]

Judge John Reddihough said it was “ironic” that the attack had left their victim unfit to plead for his knife attack, sparing him a “very long” period in jail. Salem was given a two-year supervision order.

    [...]

A neighbour urged them to stop and said Salem would be killed, he said. But they continued “like a pack of animals” and it was “fortuitous” he did not die, Judge Reddihough said.

He said: “You involved yourselves in a terribly violent and unnecessary assault on Waled Salem which amounted to a revenge attack.”
--Munir Hussain and brother Tokeer convicted over Desborough Park Road, High Wycombe GBH attack, Bucks Free Press, 2009-12-15

As far as I can tell, it was strictly speaking illegal for them to arm themselves, give chase and attack the guy when they caught him, but it's hard to imagine anyone pursuing them for that. It was the continued vicious assault after they'd already brought the guy to a halt that led to jail sentences.

Update: Thanks to [info]autopope for linking to this below. What sort of society praises vigilantes with cricket bats?, Catherine Bennett, Observer, Sunday 20 December 2009

E-mail I have just received from Power 2010: Warning: eating disorder triggers )

    My reply: Still triggery )

I am still shaking. If any of you felt moved to complain similarly to office@power2010.org.uk, I think that would be a good thing.

Signal boost: calling friends in the Chicago area
A 15-year-old relative of [info]karnythia is missing. If you have any information, please contact the Chicago police on (312)747-8274. If you're not in the area, but have friends who are, signal-boosting would be welcome.

    Stef just came in...
...and saw I was still gloating about RATM making the top spot. And so I put KITN on and I pulled the headphones out so he could hear it (he's more of a Beethoven man, so he hadn't heard it). Not his thing, of course, but then, interestingly, after dissing the song as "not terribly festive", he then started sounding off about how he was pissed off that we never get an interesting song for Christmas number one these days, and how he missed those days. And of course, I then pointed out that that was exactly the point.

I think I may have convinced him, although I don't think RATM will ever be *quite* to his taste.

    Roleplaying Games
It's getting near NYE, and so it's time for me to resolve to do more (or rather some) roleplaying next year.

But what? I have played lot of games over the years, and own a fair few (poll beneath the cut).

Read more... ) This is not (emphatically not) a call for players, it's just the RPG parts of my brane waking up and running a systems check (as it were).

Booklist 2009, part 38: Pratchett, feminism
    70) Terry Pratchett, Nation (London: Doubleday, 2008, ISBN 9780385613705). I loved how dark this was, and it had some messages about heroism and responsibility that I approved of. Contrary to reports, I don't think it is really about nationalism to any meaningful extent; you could replace the word "Nation" with any other word that might be used both by Pacific Islanders and by British Imperialists to describe their communities and the story would work just as well. The atheism/existentialism was written rather heavy-handedly at times, especially early on, but some of it was also quite moving. Inevitably the handling of racial issues is rather faily, although by no means as bad as it could be. We also saw the stage production at the National this afternoon, which was considerably less dark and lost some power for it, although it had other things in its favour (worth seeing for the parrot alone.)

    69) Sandra Harding and Merrill B. Hintikka (eds.), Discovering Reality: Feminist Perspectives on Epistemology, Metaphysics, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science (Springer, 1998, Kindle edition). This disappointed me a little - there is very little actual epistemology or metaphysics in it. Some of it would probably be better characterised as sociology.

I do use my mobile, but not that much
I do wonder how viable Spotify is when half the ads on its free service are about itself.

One that wasn't just now was from Vodafone. 'Why not buy a phone + £100 of calls for a xmas present?' it asks, before giving you the answer: because the calls voucher expires after 30 days.

Clearly I am not its target market. That'd keep me going for several years.

    The Christmas number one race
By the way, I'm backing RATM, of course, and am hoping some of you may be tempted to do so too. They could do with the help. It doesn't matter to me that they're signed to a label under the umbrella of Sony, in which Cowell has a stake; it's not about trying to put less money into his pocket IMV (what a waste of time that would be). What matters to me is that, for the first time in years, it's actually an interesting race. And in my opinion, the whole RATM for Christmas no.1 campaign is an absolutely delightful piece of seasonal whimsy and just damn good fun. And, in all honesty, I think it speaks well of the UK for all those in other countries who may be as tired as we are of the bland uniformity being foisted on them musically that we actually have a real shot here at upsetting the applecart even just a little bit. We may be an era away from our own Obama moment, but at least we can still rock.

And I do think that Cowell will be genuinely pissed off if RATM somehow manages to pull it off, whatever he might hope people think he thinks with his competent media manipulation and all. The X-Factor song is still going to be hard to beat, since the download part of the week will have leaned more heavily towards the pro-RATM vote, but it'll put a big smile on my face if they do manage to win. :o)

Plus, it's a damn good song.

And if you're still not convinced, bear in mind I will be spending Xmas on my own (out of choice, but still) and my oven is broken, so I probably won't even be able to do myself nice roast potatoes. Nevertheless, I will pretend to be more upset about that than I am so I can start the "Put a Smile on [info]ajva's Face for Xmas" campaign. Howsaboutit, kids?

lazyweb - probably three lines of PHP
sux0r looks ideal for what I want to do with some RSS feeds. Unfortunately, it has a limit on the length of URLs of 255 characters (source as supplied) or 360ish (due to a limit on the size of MySQL database keys) and some of the URLs are longer than this.

I have tried setting up shorter URLs with two 'tiny url' services, but they use a 301 'permanent redirect' (i.e. they say 'that URL has changed - please always use this one in future') and it looks like being faced with the longer URL in this way this upsets sux0r too. Ditto temporary redirects done via my webserver.

So because I am running out of options, please forgive me for asking for something I know is really simple when I say...

... what's a php script to take the output from one URL and chuck it at the requesting browser?

The idea is to have http://example.com/rss-01.php give the same output as http://sodding-long-url-that-goes-on-forever... (and that URL can be hard-coded)

Edit: sorted. It would help if I gave it the url of the rss feed, not the general page, cough :)

    New story!
I've written a new story - the first one in many years! It's on Elfwood:

Meanwhile I have two other projects ongoing which could run to novel length if I can only get the two lead characters to co-operate...

    Sometimes ...
When a friend loses their father, it can make you think about how, when you are getting on this much, your father could well be next.

Apologies to anyone who has confronted this and dealt with it already, but this is suddenly a great big thought in the front of my head. I think I shall definitely make sure that I go see my folks this festive season.

And as for Pa Brooks, Sid's Dad - what can I say except you were one hell of a guy, I really enjoyed working with you, and when I was at a very low point in my life you welcomed me into your family. Gonna miss you.
